A Nutritional Therapist is somebody who has a qualification in nutritional therapy which has included deep training into the science of nutrition, biochemistry and anatomy. They work with both healthy individuals to prevent disease and individuals who are unwell, to minimise symptoms and uncover contributing factors. Nutritional Therapists develop bespoke and holistic health plans to optimise health and wellbeing. It's important to note there are 'nutritional therapists' and 'registered nutritional therapists'. Whilst nutritional therapy is not a term governed by law, voluntary governing bodies such as BANT and CNHC have taken this on to ensure that their 'registered' members follow strict professional standards and undergo regular Continuing Professional Development (CPD). I am a fully registered member of both governing bodies.
A Nutritionist is anybody who claims to be an expert in nutrition. It’ is not regulated by law and therefore Nutritionists may have varying levels of qualifications and may not belong to a governing body.
A Dietician holds a degree in Dietetics and typically works within a hospital environment or private practice. Their title is protected by law. A dietician is legally allowed to supply and prescribe medication that is prescription only. Dieticians will often work within multidisciplinary healthcare teams with patients presenting symptoms at the time of their consultation. This can result in “managing” symptoms, though often will not place focus on addressing the underlying cause of the problem to create long term solutions. Symptoms therefore often return as soon as medication is stopped.
Please note some individuals use the term Nutritionist or Nutritional Therapist having only completed a short course in nutrition. Often these courses are held online without any supervised clinical training. There are also a lot of 'hobby' nutritionists out there as well as Personal Trainers offering nutritional advice. It's always okay to ask about the qualifications a healthcare professional has.
I have a masters degree in Nutritional Science and Practice. This was a 3-year qualification which included a day of clinical practice every 5 weeks. During these clinic days my client consultations were observed and assessed by a supervisor. In my final year I wrote a 12,000 word case study thesis, summarised in a journal article and conference poster.
I also have a first-class honours degree in Pharmacology with Professional Placement Year from Newcastle University. Pharmacology is the study of the study of how chemical agents, both natural and synthetic (i.e., drugs) affect biological systems. This degree has given me an appreciation for the critical role that medication can play in health, but also how nutrition and lifestyle modifications can influence how effective a drug is and how severe the side effects are. I often work with clients to ensure the medications they are taking are optimised by dietary habits.
And finally, I have an Active IQ Extended Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training.
I'm also a qualified swimming instructor!
Please ask if you would like me to provide proof of these qualifications, I'm more than happy to do so.
Well, in my opinion pretty much everyone can benefit from nutritional therapy (and I'm not just saying that!). I don't just see people with complex health conditions, I also can help people who want to achieve peak performance and ensure they're as close to optimum health as possible.
Clients often come to me often when they realise their food and lifestyle choices may be contributing to their symptoms and need help making the changes to alleviate these symptoms i.e. weight gain, energy dips, digestive discomfort, hormone imbalances, low mood, bad skin.
Let me advise you! Schedule a free 15 minute discovery call.
Before the Initial Consultation: You will receive a questionnaire and diet diary to complete so I can understand your health history and goals.
During the Initial Consultation: I will ask detailed questions about your health concerns, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment, medical history, family history, lifestyle, levels of physical activity, use of medication and supplements and diet.
After the consultation: I will evaluate this information and use the extensive evidence base for nutritional science to develop a personalised, safe and effective nutrition and lifestyle regime.
Follow Up: As nutritional therapy places a heavy focus on making sustainable change and building health habits, multiple sessions are encouraged. At each session I will review your progress and make new recommendations as needed.
Functional testing is the term used to describe in depth laboratory tests (often urine, stool or dried saliva) that go beyond what your doctor would carry out. These tests examine physiological processes within the body rather than just specific markers of ‘disease’. They are used to help understand the underlying factors that could be contributing to your symptoms or health concerns. For example, they can help identify potential food intolerances, gut or hormone imbalance, immune dysfunction and nutrient deficiencies.
I look at these results alongside your case history to help connect dots and remove some elements of guess work.
Many clients come to me knowing something is wrong despite their GP telling them they're fine. This is often because conventional tests have not picked anything up or references ranges based on the ‘average’ population has been used. We are all biochemically unique and just because your test results fall within the average range, does not mean everything is working optimally.
Book a free discovery call with me if you'd like to discuss whether this testing may be beneficial for you.
Yes! Building healthy habits as early as possible is so important and I fully encourage students to get on board with prioritising their wellbeing. Please reach out and we can discuss a discounted rate.
Yes, I'd love you to share your experience with friends and family. Send me an email with their details and I'll make sure they get 10% off their initial consultation. In return, you'll get 20% off any future service you book with me.
I have been trained to recognise the point at which the scope of my practice ends and further support from a medical professional or another healthcare professional is needed. In such cases, I will work with you to ensure you get the support you need.
Absolutely, if you're happy for me to do so.
